After Secondary School Winfried Kretschmann first did his military service and went on to study biology and chemistry at the University of Hohenheim prior to taking his grammar school teaching qualification. Politically active since his student days, Kretschmann and others founded The Green Party in Baden-Württemberg/Germany in 1979. In 2002, Kretschmann was elected Chairman of the Parliamentary Group The Green Party in the State Parliament of Baden-Württemberg and held this office until 2011. Winfried Kretschmann has been Minister-President of the State of Baden-Württemberg since May 2011. Re-elected in 2016 Winfried Kretschmann pursues a new style of politics committed to inclusion and sustainability and has set himself the target of implementing a process of ecological and social renewal in the State. In Germany he is the first Minister-President of The Green Party. Kretschmann has been married to his wife Gerlinde since 1975. The couple has three adult children.
